Mine Action Achievments and Challenges

Mines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war cannot just be switched off. Even decades after a conflict, they remain active, and ready to kill and injure. Year after year, they kill and maim thousands of people. Mines and duds stop displaced people from returning, impede sustainable development and constitute an obstacle to peace.

20 years of International Mine Action Standards (IMAS)

For 20 years, the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) have guided work to clear landmines and other explosive ordnance around the world. GICHD hears from partners and collaborators about what these standards now mean for humanitarian demining.

Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) leads, coordinates and implements activities to mitigate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices.

Beyond Square Meters Cleared: Mine Action and Development

Mine Action community is in need of common approaches to the “outcome level” of Mine Action. UNDP as the lead agency within IACG-MA on linking Mine Action to achievement of the SDGs, is committed to scale-up the efforts in applying developmental lens to Mine Action, in partnership with national counterparts, NGOs and operators on the ground.
